Every billion-dollar AI company headquartered in or operating from London
London's AI ecosystem has produced a concentration of billion-dollar companies unmatched anywhere in Europe outside of the frontier labs. As of March 2026, LDN/ai tracks the following companies valued at $1B+ with significant London operations.
| Company | Valuation | Funding | Sector | Founded |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| nScale | $14.6B | $2B+ | AI Infrastructure | 2021 |
| ElevenLabs | $11B | $781M | Voice/Generative | 2022 |
| Wayve | $8.6B | ~$2.5B | Autonomous Driving | 2017 |
| Helsing | €12B | €1.37B | Defence AI | 2021 |
| Cohere | $5.5B+ | ~$1B | Enterprise NLP | 2019 |
| Darktrace | $5.3B | $230M | Cyber AI | 2013 |
| Synthesia | $4B | ~$530M | AI Video | 2017 |
| Onfido→Entrust | $1.5B | $242M | Identity | 2012 |
| Tractable | $1B | $185M | Insurance CV | 2014 |
| Builder.ai | $1B+ | ~$450M | No-Code | 2016 |
| PhysicsX | ~$1B | ~$175M | AI Engineering | 2023 |
| Stability AI | $1B | ~$300M | Image Gen | 2019 |
| Oxbotica | $1B+ | ~$225M | Autonomous | 2014 |
Note: Anthropic ($380B), OpenAI ($157B+), Google DeepMind, and Meta AI/FAIR have London offices but are US-headquartered. They are tracked in LDN/ai but excluded from the London unicorn count.
London AI unicorns skew heavily toward enterprise and deep tech rather than consumer applications. Wayve, Helsing, and Isembard sell to OEMs, defence ministries, and manufacturers. Synthesia and ElevenLabs serve enterprise L&D and media teams. Even Cleo ($500M+ valuation) targets a mass-market consumer base but monetises through subscriptions.
The exception is nScale ($14.6B), which represents a new category: sovereign AI infrastructure. European governments and enterprises are willing to pay a premium to keep AI compute in-jurisdiction, and nScale is building the physical infrastructure to serve that demand.
Not all unicorn stories end well. BenevolentAI went public at $4B+ and now trades at a fraction — the market learned that AI speeds drug discovery but doesn't skip clinical trials. Exscientia was acquired by Recursion at $688M, down from a $5B peak valuation. Stability AI narrowly avoided collapse after its founder's departure and trades at a steep discount to its $4B peak. These are important reminders that valuation and value creation are different things.
Companies approaching unicorn status include Tessl ($750M valuation, $125M pre-product), PolyAI ($500M+, voice AI), and Cleo ($500M+, profitable). In frontier-emerging, Ineffable Intelligence (founded by David Silver of AlphaGo fame) is seeking $1B at ~$4B.
